Hello Maverick Family!
The school year is off to a great start. Students and staff have been so excited to be in school together, learning and growing and making new friends. Every time I peek into a classroom, I see that the important work of learning is happening. While we are not totally back to pre-pandemic normal as we continue to take precautions, school is a fun place to be right now!
As we settle into the school year, we are starting to identify the holes created by all the upheaval of the last 18 months. I very intentionally avoid using the term "learning loss" for our students. While their learning has not been as fully focused on reading, math, science, and so on, they have been busy learning to navigate a world that changed very quickly. Now that perhaps our world feels a bit more stable, we must return our focus more fully to reading, math, and science again. And we could use our community's help to do this.
I am thrilled to report that our schools are open to volunteers who have always been so generous with their time and talents. There are so many ways we can use people who want to help students, no matter how much or how little time you have to give.
I did a quick survey of our staff to find out what MCW has used volunteers for in the past and what we could use them for now. There are so many possibilities! From reading or practicing math facts with individual or small groups of students to playing educational board games to correcting student work to prepping for special projects to just making copies and laminating, we can always use an extra set of adult hands in classrooms. We could also use people to help supervise the playground after school or serve as crossing guards on the busy intersections near our buildings.
If you only have time for ocassional events, we could use some help when we give preschoolers their development screening, preparing our FFA members for contests and interviews, being a guest speaker in classrooms, fruit orders, working at the book fairs, and supervising concession stands. We would love to have people send us photos of our students and staff at sporting events, concerts, and performances that we can use on our Facebook pages.
I know we have people in our community who have skills to share with and time to dedicate to our studets to help them be successful in the classroom and beyond. Whether you have once a day, once a week, once a year to give, we would love to have you join the team working to develop our Maverick students into the best versions of themselves they can be. Please contact the District Office for more information on how to get started volunteering in our schools today.
